Unwired expands wireless broadband network

" Unwired Australia has begun work on a wireless broadband network in Melbourne.

Unwired, which already operates a network in Sydney, said it had commenced its network build in parts of Melbourne today.

As Australia's second largest city, Unwired chief executive David Spence said Melbourne was the obvious choice for the company ... "

Newspapers take aim at Google in copyright dispute

" A group representing global newspaper publishers has launched a lobbying campaign to challenge search engines like Google that aggregate news content.

The move comes as the newspaper industry's traditional business model is under pressure with advertising spending shifting away from print and toward the internet ... "

SideStep Opens on Amazon, Enters Britain and Ireland

" Travel search engine SideStep Inc. opened its store yesterday on Amazon.com, giving a huge traffic boost to the engine.

The Santa Clara, CA, company also announced its entry into Ireland and Britain, both fragmented markets full of discount air carriers and small hotels and rental car firms. Irish and British consumers now can search for travel deals online through the site at www.sidestep.com, with their browsers set to the pertinent country.

SideStep's expansion news comes two weeks after former Yahoo executive Rob Solomon took over as president/CEO. He previously was vice president and general manager of Yahoo Shopping Group.

The company's presence on Amazon will let consumers search hundreds of travel sites for flight, car rental, hotel and vacation deals online ... "

Google Revenue Up 93% In 2005

" SAN JOSE, Calif. Search engine specialist Google Inc. reported revenues of $1.919 billion for the quarter ended Dec. 31, an increase of 86 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2004 and an increase of 22 percent compared to the third quarter of 2005.

GAAP net income for the fourth quarter was $372 million as compared to $381 million in the third quarter. GAAP EPS for the fourth quarter was $1.22 on 304 million diluted shares outstanding, compared to $1.32 for the third quarter, on 290 million diluted shares outstanding ... "

Google to develop new OS?

" Rumors that Google plans to encroach on the desktop turf of Microsoft flittered around the Internet on Tuesday.

Apparently, the chatter sprang from a Jan. 20 Financial Times story, which reported that Google was working on switching its in-house computers over to the Linux operating system. According to the story, Google is developing its own version of Ubuntu, the software suite developed by tech entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.

That in of itself is no big deal. Scores of companies have swapped Microsoft for Linux ... "

Microsoft Amends Blog Shutdown Policies

" The Redmond software company, operator of a popular blogging technology called MSN Spaces, said Tuesday that it will endeavor to make blogs available to users elsewhere even if Microsoft decides it is legally obliged to block them in a particular country.

The company also pledged to provide users with a clear notice that it has shut down a Web site when the decision to do so stemmed from a legal mandate. Previously, it has simply said the content was unavailable ... "

Napster stock leaps on Google rumor

" According to a story in the New York Post, Google has been looking to develop its own music service and is exploring a possible alliance or even an outright purchase of Napster.

Google, which reports earnings later today, recently introduced a music search feature that offers users faster access to music-related information. The function displays links to third party sites like Napster, where interested users can purchase music directly ... "
