News Ltd joins the search business
" Global media giant News Ltd has launched a local online search directory taking it head-to-head with Telstra's Sensis website, the dominant player in the local listing market.
The http://www.truelocal.com.au website will tie in News Ltd's network of 100 community newspapers and target local businesses, who will be able to add their names to the local listing database for free, the company said.
The local directory market differs from more generic search engines by providing a database of business listings linked to specific geographical areas much like a traditional print directory ... "

Seeing is Believing

" On the outside, the newest iMac looks a lot like the last iMac G5. The built-in iSight camera, Apple Remote and Front Row software are all there, along with the same all-in-one packaging. What's new, of course, is the shift from a PowerPC G5 to the new Intel Core Duo - the same chip powering the new MacBook Pro. The result: Apple says the latest iMac works 2 to 3 times faster than its predecessor ... "

Steve Jobs' Magic Kingdom
" Early on a July workday in 1997, Jim McCluney, then head of Apple's worldwide operations got the call. McCluney was summoned with other top brass of the beleaguered company to Apple Computer Inc.'s boardroom on its Cupertino (Calif.) campus. Embattled Chief Executive Gil Amelio wasted no time. With an air of barely concealed relief, he said: "Well, I'm sad to report that it's time for me to move on. Take care," McCluney recalls. And he left ... "

When Terry Met Jerry, Yahoo!
" WHEN Yahoo Inc. announced nearly five years ago that Terry S. Semel, then a former leader of the Warner Brothers motion picture studio, would become its chairman and chief executive, the reaction both outside and within Yahoo was not exactly one of wild encouragement.
Despite a hugely successful career running companies that make movies, television shows and music, Mr. Semel was immediately labeled an "old media" guy. Worse, he was a Hollywood guy, and had barely touched a computer during the nearly two decades he oversaw Warner Brothers with Robert A. Daly.
Even though he had been making private Internet investments since resigning from the studio two years earlier, when people associated "Semel" and "Yahoo," they were more likely to think of an Australian comic named Yahoo Serious who starred in the 1988 Warner Brothers flop "Young Einstein." Mr. Semel's former boss at Time Warner, Gerald M. Levin, who had just completed his merger with America Online, laughed incredulously when he heard the news of Mr. Semel's new gig in April 2001, according to an executive who was with Mr. Levin at the time ... Perths hovering google car

" Eagle eyed users of the satellite imaging service Google Earth have spotted what appears to be a car hovering above the ground in a suburban Perth car park.
The photo is of a car park just off Honour Avenue at Point Walter in the affluent south western suburb of Bicton. The spot is a popular picnic location on the banks of the Swan River.
A number of cars are shown in parking bays and the vehicle in question appears to hovering above the ground nearby, its shadow clearly visible beneath ... "

Google Admits Video Launch Was A Mistake
" When the new Google Video launched, we thought it was worth noting that the initial response from people was awful. We didn't doubt that Google would improve it, or that it could become a powerful platform eventually -- but were surprised that such a hyped up product was launched in such a way to make so many people go "huh?" In other Google product launches, there's been an immediate "wow" factor that wasn't just missing with Google Video -- it seemed to have been completely stamped out. It appears that even Google is now admitting that they should have thought through the launch a bit more.
Google's Marissa Mayer (who we think is starting to get more press coverage than Brin, Page or Schmidt these days) has now admitted that "We made a big mistake" with the launch of Google Video. Of course, it's not clear that the company has figured out what that mistake really was. Mayer says: "You can't come out and launch a product like Google Video and say 'CSI' and 'Survivor' are there if they're not on the home page."

Microsoft Has Google On The Run
" Gates said Microsoft is working on two products, "Windows Live" and "Office Live," that create opportunities for the company to sell online subscriptions and advertising. Both are targeted at smaller businesses and consumers.
The products won't replace the company's ubiquitous operating system or productivity suite, and people don't need to have that software loaded to tap into the Web versions... Gates said that Windows Live is a set of Internet-based personal services, such as e-mail, blogging and instant messaging. It will be primarily supported by advertising and be separate from the operating system itself. Office Live will come in both ad-based and subscription versions that augment the popular desktop productivity suite ... "

Google Toolbar 4
Google Plans Monday Beta For Toolbar Upgrade
Google Toolbar 4 has features for customizing the toolbar; enhanced, bookmarks hosted on Google's servers; enhanced search; and a new sharing capability called Send To.
" Google on Monday plans to release beta of an update to the Google Toolbar for both consumers and enterprise users.
"The major direction we have taken with this version is empowering users to really personalize, configure, and customize the toolbar to the way they'd like it to be," says Sundar Pichai, Googles project manager for client software.
Google Toolbar 4 has four main features: custom buttons, centralized bookmarks, enhanced search, and a new sharing capability called Send To.
Custom buttons can be created to access pre-defined searches or pre-set data sources like RSS feeds. Because Google has made Toolbar APIs available, site owners will be able to set up Toolbar buttons tied to their sites that site visitors can install with a click.
Pichai expects this will help site owners enhance their relationship with visitors ... "

Google AdSense Limits Referral Payout to 90 Day Window
" AdSense silently adds a 90-day time limit on AdSense referrals
A thread over at DigitalPoint points out that Google AdSense has quietly added a new term to all AdSense referrals generated by a publisher. They have now instituted a 90-day time limit on that referral, meaning a referred publisher must earn the $100 within the first 90 days, before the referring publisher is eligible to earn that $100 for a completed AdSense referral ...
